Surfing the E2 Isar Wave: A Compact Guide description

Discover The E2 Isar Wave

If you’re in Munich and looking for something beyond museums and cafés, it’s time for a real adventure. One of the best activities in the city is surfing the E2 wave on the Isar River.

Many people stop to watch surfers in amazement, but only a few take the plunge themselves. This guide will help you get started smoothly and make your first surfing experience enjoyable.

Spend a couple of hours practicing and leveling up your skills, but be prepared for cold water — temperatures range from 17–14°C in summer and can drop to 4–6°C in winter. A wetsuit is highly recommended.

Unlike the more famous E1 Eisbach wave, the E2 wave is beginner-friendly and an excellent starting point for anyone interested in river surfing in Munich.

Ready to ride the E2 wave? Make it part of your next Munich adventure — let’s get started!

Essential tips for your visit to The E2 Isar Wave

  • Use the Munich River Surfing App to check the water level and flow before heading out, as the E2 wave's surfability depends on them. The water level should be around 130 to 140 cm, with a flow of approximately 21 m^2/s. Otherwise, it might be challenging to surf.
  • Wear appropriate safety gear, including a wetsuit (even in summer, the water can be cold), neoprene shoes, and, if it's still cold, a hood. In winter, I recommend using at least a 4/5 mm wetsuit.
  • For the E2 wave, you can use a longer board than on E1. If you're a beginner, a longer board (7') would offer more stability, making your start easier. Otherwise, you can go with a smaller board (6') for a more curvy and agile surfing style.
  • If you just want to try out surfing and don't want to buy all the equipment, head to SantoLoco Surf Café, where you can rent it. From there, you can take the tram to reach the wave. Alternatively, you can check eBay Kleinanzeigen for used kit and resell it later.
