Introduction
Tenerife, the largest of Spain's Canary Islands, is renowned for its dramatic landscapes and crystal-clear waters, making it a prime location for freediving enthusiasts. I recently embarked on a freediving adventure with Abnea Academy West and explored some of the island’s best snorkeling spots. Here’s a recap of my thrilling experience.
The Course: Abnea Academy West
My freediving journey began with a course at Abnea Academy West, guided by an experienced and patient instructor. This course was not only about diving deep, but also about understanding the importance of breathing techniques and mental focus.
Key Exercises:
- Diaphragmatic Breathing: We spent a significant amount of time mastering breathing techniques, particularly diaphragmatic breathing. This technique is essential for freedivers, as it helps increase lung capacity and oxygen efficiency, which are crucial for longer dives.
- Diving Depths: Under expert guidance, we practiced diving on a single breath, starting at a depth of 5 meters and gradually progressing to 7 meters. The sense of accomplishment when reaching new depths was exhilarating.
- Morning Breathing Exercises: Every morning began with breathing exercises designed to calm the mind and prepare the body for the day’s dives. These exercises were not just about physical preparation but also about fostering a deep connection with the underwater world.
Freediving and Snorkeling Locations
1. Abades (Playa Abrigos)
The freediving course took place at Abades, specifically at Playa Abrigos. This location is known for its calm, clear waters, providing a perfect setting for beginners and seasoned divers alike. However, the tranquility of the water can vary depending on the wind direction. If the conditions at Abades are rough, it’s advisable to explore the other side of the island, where the water may be calmer.
Travel Note: On the first day, we took the bus to reach Abades. The journey required two buses and took a considerable amount of time, making it a less convenient option. I would recommend finding alternative transportation to make the trip more efficient.
2. Playa Amarilla
While not part of the course, Playa Amarilla turned out to be the best snorkeling spot we visited. The underwater scenery was teeming with vibrant marine life, with schools of fish creating a mesmerizing spectacle. However, the waves at Playa Amarilla were quite strong, so caution was necessary while snorkeling. Despite the challenging conditions, the beauty of this location made it a highlight of the trip.
Final Thoughts
Freediving in Tenerife with Abnea Academy West was an unforgettable experience. From mastering breathing techniques to exploring the depths of the Atlantic, every moment was filled with learning and adventure. The diverse underwater landscapes and rich marine life of Tenerife’s snorkeling spots, particularly Abades and Playa Amarilla, made the experience all the more memorable.
If you’re looking to explore the underwater world, Tenerife offers an excellent combination of professional freediving courses and stunning natural beauty. Just remember to plan your transportation carefully and be mindful of the ocean’s conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.
