Introduction
Herzogstand, a well-known mountain in Bavaria, offers a rewarding hike with stunning views and a refreshing experience. Here's a summary of a day's adventure hiking this iconic peak.
Journey and Arrival
The hike starts with a train journey to Kochel, followed by a bus ride. Be prepared for a crowded commute as many people frequent this route, often leaving no seats available. Despite this, the journey is part of the adventure and sets the tone for the day. Arriving at the starting point around 10:30 AM, you'll be ready to embark on the hike.
The Hike
The hike to Herzogstand is moderately challenging but not too steep, making it accessible for most hikers. The total duration is approximately 3 hours, plus a one-hour break to enjoy the surroundings and catch your breath. Along the way, you'll encounter a zigzag route that offers a choice: stick to the regular path or take a steeper shortcut through the fields. This adds a bit of variety and challenge to the hike.
Rest and Relaxation
After completing the hike, you'll reach the beer garden at the top around 4:00 PM. This is the perfect spot to relax, enjoy a cold drink, and take in the panoramic views of the Bavarian landscape. It’s a well-deserved reward after the hike.
Descent and Return
To descend, you can take the cable car, which departs at around 4:40 PM. The ride takes only 5 minutes, offering a quick and scenic return to the base. This is a great way to end the day, saving your energy after the hike and giving you a different perspective of the mountain.
Conclusion
Hiking Herzogstand is a fulfilling experience that combines physical activity with the beauty of nature. Whether you're an avid hiker or just looking for a day trip in Bavaria, this trail offers something for everyone. Remember to plan your journey, start early to avoid crowds, and enjoy the stunning views that Herzogstand has to offer.

Note: It is also possible to hike Herzogstand from the other side. The hike should be more challenging but also more breathtaking. Unfortunately, I didn't try taking the other route yet.
